How to Perform Popcorn Ceiling Removal

Read Time:1 Minute, 9 Second

First, prepare the area to be treated. In New England, the ceiling will be plaster, and in other areas, it will be drywall. To remove popcorn ceiling, spray the area with warm water and scrape the old material from the studs. To prevent the surface from delaminating, use a problem surface sealer, such as Gardz by Benjamin Moore. Sand the area thoroughly and then paint it. Then, apply the finish coat to the ceiling.

The popcorn ceiling is made of asbestos, which is a danger. You can remove it yourself, but you should avoid touching the ceiling with your bare hands. For best results, hire a professional to do the job. However, it is not easy to get rid of it on your own, so you’ll need some basic tools. In the first step, use a large floor scraper to scrape away the material. After the popcorn ceiling is removed, use a smaller putty knife to get rid of any leftover materials.

Make sure to remove all fixtures before you begin. If you have to remove ceiling fixtures, protect them with a plastic sheet. If your ceiling is painted with a stain-blocking primer, you should be able to remove the entire layer of goopy material. Once you’ve removed the entire layer of goop, apply a new, flat ceiling paint. It will hide imperfections and add a modern look to your room.
